What Is Included In A Residential Electrical System?

The two main components of a residential electrical system include incoming power lines and electric receptacles.

Otherwise known as an electric service drop, the incoming power lines include a bundle of cables that run into your home from outside. The outside connection is owned by your electricity utility company and is usually found coming from a pole on the street or an underground system.

Receptacles are the outlets that serve as the connecting point within the home that allows a resident to connect to the power coming from the incoming power lines. Residential receptacles are relatively inexpensive but they also tend to have a shorter lifespan than commercial grade receptacles. This requires replacement over an outlet’s lifespan.

What Are The Most Common Types Of Electrical Services In A Residential Home?

The two most common reasons that an electrician is called in to work on a private residence is to repair dead outlets or to work on the home’s electrical panel.

Dead outlets can be a frustrating nuisance because they require you to constantly work around the non-working outlets. The cause of this issue can be simple, or a symptom of a greater problem.

The simplest reason for a dead outlet is its relatively short lifespan and a need for a simple replacement. Other causes may signal an issue with the wiring in the wall.

Possible causes of a dead outlets are:

  • A tripped circuit breaker – the circuit breaker has detected an issue and shut itself off.
  • Bad, old or dangerous wiring – this can result from the age of the house or poor inadequate initial installation.
  • A tripped ground fault circuit interrupter – also known as GFCI, this is a fast acting shut off mechanism.

A home’s electrical panel is a box in your home that connects the wires coming from the street to the wires in your home’s electrical system. It is the central point, or motherboard, that takes the service drop from outside and splits it off into the various wiring points (AKA branch circuits) in your house. Because the electrical panel is the central distribution point for all of your electricity, it carries an immense job. An electrician may be called to repair issues in a service panel or to add more circuits to it.

Why Should A Licensed Electrician Do Residential Electrical Work?

Although the average person never gives much thought to the electricity that flows into their home and brings it to life, the reality is that electricity is highly dangerous and can be potentially deadly if not handled correctly. While something as simple as an electrical outlet can seem harmless to the naked eye, all electrical wires, even dead ones, are potentially surrounded by live wires.

At Above and Beyond Service Company, we only hire electricians who are experienced in the field and know how to take all precautions to keep themselves and your family safe. Trying to fix an electrical problem by yourself can have serious consequences.

Electrical FAQ

What steps can I take to lower my energy bills?

There are a few simple things you can do to help reduce your energy bills.

First, ensure that your air conditioning unit is properly sealed and insulated. You can also install a programmable thermostat to help regulate the temperature in your home.

Another great way to save on energy costs is regularly clean or replace your air filters. Finally, make sure to keep all of your doors and windows closed when the AC is running.

Why is the temperature uneven in my home?

If your home has more than one room, then the air conditioner or heater may not have reached total capacity yet, which could cause uneven temperatures throughout the house. Another reason for this issue may be that your home is not adequately insulated. You can call a professional to help you identify the source of the problem and fix it.

If you are trying to conserve energy, make sure all your doors and windows are closed tightly. If there are any leaks in your home, then the conditioned air will escape, and this will cause the temperature to be uneven.

You should also ensure that your air conditioner or heater is correctly sized for your home. If it is too small, it will not be able to cool or heat your entire house evenly.
